Globally-Minded Students find a home at the new Global Lounge & Resource Centre
Friday, October 30, 2009
International Student Development has launched a new informal study and meeting place in Marine Drive residences. The Simon KY Lee Global Lounge and Resource Centre has opened for business and everyone is invited to stop by. From November 1-13, the Lounge is open on Fridays, from 1-4 pm. From November 16, the Lounge will be open from 10 am - 7 pm, Monday to Friday.
If you are interested in making a difference in the world around you, the Global Lounge provides you with an opportunity to connect with other UBC students and get involved with international issues that matter to you. The Global Lounge & Resource Centre shows UBC's commitment to fostering global citizenship by offering a home to international and globally-minded students and issues. It is the home of 25 founding globally-focused student clubs and organizations, representing membership of more than 1000 students. These groups regularly sponsor events in the Lounge for the entire UBC community. Look for speaker series, international film fests, performances, sporting events and the Olympics - all at the Global Lounge.
After November 16, stop by the Lounge between classes to enjoy wireless internet as well as our state-of-the art flat screen TVs. You and your friends can watch one of our international and multi-cultural channels - catch the news from home—or your favorite telenovela from Mexico. Polish your language skills, make new friends, get involved and connect with home from one of our comfy couches.
While you're enjoying the amenities, have a cup of free fair trade coffee and tea and heat up your lunch or snack in one of our 2 microwaves, all while you take a break to study or relax.
Contact the Global Lounge & Resource Centre staff to book space for an event or meeting. Invite your prof or classmates to share a brown-bag lunch in this unique, international and welcoming space.
Currently, if you stop by the Lounge on Fridays from 1-4 pm, you will have a chance to meet an International Peer Advisor (IPA). IPAs are trained peer advisors who can answer your questions about study permits, work permits, Social Insurance Numbers, health insurance and campus resources. IPAs work hard to help all international students meet the challenge of studying in a new country. No question is too big or too small. IPAs also work at I. House and residences such as Totem Park and Place Vanier. You can see their work schedule on the IPA website at: http://www.students.ubc.ca/international/ihouse.cfm?page=peeradvisors
IPAs are also available by email (peer.advisor@ubc.ca) and have a new presence on Twitter (http://twitter.com/ubcipa) -so they are literally, as close as your internet browser or mobile phone.
Our goal is that every UBC student has the opportunity to become part of the Global Lounge & Resource Centre community –participate in an event, drop by the space for lunch, become a member of one of our founding groups.
Hope to see you soon at the Lounge!
